One of the reasons the plays written by the authors of this time were so popular was because people were able to leave reality behind and slip into a world where none of the truths they held proved to be true. A famous playwright during ancient Greece was Aristophanes. During his lifetime there was extreme political turbulence. Many of his plays reflect the issues of this time and the social concerns. However, instead of presenting these matters seriously and appropriately, he does it in a jovial and satirical manner. His sole purpose in this is to take a bad situation and make it humorous for the audience. ?It has often been said, especially in recent years, that in Aristophanes political and social thought is purely incidental and always subordinated to the desire to amuse his audience and win the prize?(Cambridge, 38). In many of his plays he mimics political situations and figures and the outcome is very humorous. The audience is able to relax and laugh about the problems facing Greece Many elements in his plays are not real and could not have even been conceived of at that time. In Aristophanes play, Lysistrata, the women of Athens and Sparta formulate a ridiculous plot to end the war by abstaining from sexual intercourse with their husbands. Aristophanes takes a difficult and pressing subject, the Peloponnesian War, and develops it into an illusive story of how a woman ends the war. The thought that a woman would have enough intelligence to end the war was a very impractical thought and the idea that Aristophanes would create such a plot was quite comedic. It made the audience feel as if they were in an unrealistic world because roles were reversed. Another reason the audience enjoyed the play was for its sheer guts. For Aristophanes to write a whole play about sexual intercourse was gutsy and the audience appreciated the fact that they could attend such a controversial event. During a time when rules and morals were stiff, Aristophanes showed the people of Greece that there is a time when you can relax and thoroughly enjoy yourself. He released some of the pressure of the war by ridiculing it. The audience had a chance to escape the harsh reality of the times and focus on the humor of Aristophanes. Another playwright of ancient literature was Plautus. He came about many years later, but his works did the same for his audiences as Aristophanes did for his. At the time Plautus was writing and performing his plays, Rome was very conservative. There were moral laws and censorship on almost everything. This was unheard of and the mere thought of this happening was surreal. In Plautus play, The Swaggering Soldier, this very event occurs. A conceited soldier, Pyrgopolynices, is deceived by own his slave, Palestrio. Palestrio, knowing his master is a woman-lover, tricks him into thi nking he can have a married woman. Pyrgopolynices is caught by her husband and loses everything he has, almost his life. The downfall of a highly ranked soldier caused by his slave is a fantasy in this era and the people of Rome enjoyed seeing this. Observing Plautus plays allowed people to feel as if none of the rules applied. They saw laws and norms broken and this was invigorating to them. Characters in Euripides plays usually suffer tremendously. They go through trial after trial, only to end up losing. As twisted, as it may seem, the audience feeds off of their pain to come to realize the important things in life. Populism Populism is a movement begun in the mid-1890s by farmers and other rural residents at the time. It quickly gained strength and has undergone many changes since then. It has not only changed in its views, but also in the political parties who utilize it not as an ideology but rather as a mode of persuasion. Populism is defined in the book as a language whose speakers see the American people as one and not as a people bound by class restrictions, who see the elite politicians who oppose them as self-serving, and who wish to bring these "average Americans" together to fight against the overbearing powers of the political elite. Populist speakers in the United States voiced their discontent with elites who ignored, corrupted, or betrayed the ideal of American democracy, which consisted of rule by the common people. After the farmers created what we know as populism in the mid-1890s, there was a parting of the ways. In the early twentieth century, farmers' enthusiasm waned but two other groups' did not. These groups consisted of the wage earners and the evangelic churchgoers. They argued that unions were now the best representation of the "average man". At the same time, middle-class Protestants were mounting campaigns as well.. This was the first transition of the populist movement. . The second transition came in the late 1940s when populism began a migration from Left to Right. Conservative groups and politicians altered the speeches once given by reformers and radicals. Many reasons are given in the book as to why this transition took place. Some of these included: the onset of the Cold War, the fact that most white Americans came to see themselves as middle-class consumers and taxpayers, and the growth of evangelical churches whose political stance was as conservative as their theology. Gradually and unevenly, a conservative populism emerged that promised to defend devout, middle-class communities against the governing elite. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, many experimented with this new shift in group. However, conservatives did not fully understand populism's potential for persuasion during elections until the 1960s. Mainly, this indoctrination came from George Wallace. Wallace rallied up the south's people; "his" people. "His" people had unglamorous jobs and a culture that treasured close families and a steady faith in God and country. They were fed up and were going to turn this country around. He managed to look and sound more like an ordinary, working American than did anyone of distinction on the white Left. Unfortunately for Wallace, though, his style made him seem part of the crisis rather than essential to solving it. He was too authentically populist, too blunt and imprudent an outlet for the anger of his followers to attract other voters who simply wanted the nation's troubles to end. Nevertheless, beginning in the late 1960s, conservative activists and politicians - mostly Republican - re-created themselves as the true representatives of average white Americans. They learned to breed the same mass resentments that George Wallace had spoken of but had been unable to ride to victory. In order to achieve what Wallace had failed in doing, a softening of his definition of "the people" was required. Instead of suggesting a takeover by angry steelworkers and street cops, conservatives announced their understanding of the concerns of the "silent majority" of producers and consumers - taxpayers, white nationals, housewives, "middle Americans" who felt betrayed by the New Left. By the end of the 1960s there was a shared dislike, among most, of the governing and cultural elite and its "supposed friends" in the ghettos and on campus. By the late 1980s it was clear that the American conservatives had not succeeded in establishing a new political order. Populism had jumped from the hands of the Left to the hands of the Right through time and continues today as a movement striving to survive in a society in which "populism" has even been used by advertisers as a fad. Whilst Humour contains a psychological factor, it is largely of intellectual appeal. It finds its basis in our capability to recognize why something is funny or not funny. Humour also depends on human and societies norms that are understood by the viewer or present in modern society. "Humour is a rubber sword - it allows you to make a point without drawing blood." Incredibly true words by Comedian Mary Hirsch and Ja'mie: Private School Girl is a prime example of Hirsch statement. Following the life of a wealthy teenager shows the impact that money and privilege can have on one's personality. For those who haven't seen Chris Lilley's side-splitting TV show, you're probably wondering what makes it so funny? Well, for a young audience, in particular teenage girls, seeing a fully grown man act out the exaggerated behaviour of a well off school girl the irony is entertaining to say the least. Using satirical humour, the hit TV show explores the issues of the upper middle class in Australia. Chris Lilley's character Ja'mie King comes from a wealthy family with a sister that she doesn't get along with a cheating father and an unappreciated stay at home mother. The first issue that arose was the dysfunction privilege could bring to a family. Ja'mie is constantly bad mouthing her mother yet always sucking up to her father who is the source of income for the family however in the families eyes Mrs King is a bit of an underachiever therefore the family doormat if you'd like. The show also allows the audience to see how money can sometimes cause people to become a bit self entitled which Ja'mie exemplifies. Through this self-entitled behaviour Ja'mie sees herself above the rules. She models this theory buy using her Prefect status to give herself and her friend advantages such as the prefect area and command other's around. However the show manages to make all these issues humor ous by approaching them in a satirical manner. This show came to my attention in 2013, all my friends were talking about it because for a teenaged private school girl like ourselves it was in some way relatable which made it all the more hilarious. However, when attempting to get my family hooked on it the way I was at the time, it didn't get quite the same reaction. My Mum and Dad didn't find her self-righteous personality quite as amusing as I did in fact they thought it was more disrespectful rather than funny. This outlook on the show could also be viewed the same by minorities that she insults and belittles throughout the show. Ja'mie: Private school Girl addresses topical issues in society, in particular ones that are controversial such as homosexuality, racism and bulling. Therefore creating a polarising effect on the audience. Personally I've never really suspected any issues with the upper middle class. I've always just jumped to finding issues with either extremely low social classes or extremely high social classes but nothing in between. However, Ja'mie: Private School Girl definitely allowed the viewer to identify the issues in this particular social class, making this show unique by discretely ridiculing the class that constantly fly's under the radar.
